"protocol": "Prepare a smooth antifogging coating using a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) that comprises either a binary copolymer poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) [poly(DMAEMA-co-MMA)] or a terpolymer containing DMAEMA segments along with a network from polymerized ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). Ensure to balance hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity in the formulation. This coating should rapidly absorb water from the environment to prevent the formation of discrete water droplets on the surface. The synthesis of hydrophilic polymers with functional groups was conducted via a free radical solution polymerization method. Specifically, the copolymer poly(DMAEMA-co-MMA) was synthesized by adding 9.6 g of DMAEMA and 2.0 g of MMA into a 250 mL flask, then dissolving in toluene to achieve a 10 wt % solution. Following the addition of 0.058 g of AIBN as a thermal initiator, the mixture was purged with argon for 20 minutes and subjected to polymerization at 70 °C for 24 hours. The resulting poly(DMAEMA-co-MMA), referred to as B-75 with 75 mol% of DMAEMA segments, was purified by dissolution in chloroform followed by precipitation in hexane. For partial quaternization, 1.0 g of B-75 was dissolved with 0.063 g of 1-bromoundecane in 15 mL of acetonitrile in a 50 mL flask, followed by a 24-hour reaction at 70 °C. The resulting product was likewise purified and dried in a vacuum oven at 45 °C for 24 hours. The yield from the quaternization process was 95%."
